New’s title: Hellbenders need help!
Date of publication: February the 6th, 2015
Source of information: Student Society for Science
Scientific field: Animals, environment and pollution.

Extract: Recent studies have estimated that threats to  these giant amphibians could spell trouble for everyone. This threats include habitat destruction, pollution and climate change.
As a result, populations in many areas are shrinking or even disappearing. In recent years, biologists have been finding fewer and fewer young hellbenders in many wilds rivers. Toxic chemicals and removing water for fracking or other uses can make problems worse.

Critical appraisal:
This article reveals the enormous problematic related to the giant amphibians called hellbenders.
In the first place, I’d like to say that hellbenders have already disappeared from some of the streams because humans have ruined their habitats in many places.
Secondly, I think that we should take more care of our planet. I believe that we should leave our world as pure as we can because future generations don’t deserve to live in such a contaminated world.
Luckily, amid this reality there are many biologist investigated the reasons for disappeared. In 2011 they get hellbenders to reproduce at the zoo and lab studies also examine DNA  to see how closely related different animals are and if there are any signs of inbreeding.
Glossary:
-Inbreeding: The mating of animals that are too closely related, genetically. It is the opposite of genetic diversity. Animals that are inbred tend to become weak or sickly and often cannot reproduce successfully.
- DNA: A long, double-stranded and spiral-shaped molecule inside most living cells that carries genetic instructions. In all living things, from plants and animals o microbes, these instructions tell cells which molecules to make.
- Amphibians: A group of animals that includes frogs, salamanders ans caecilians. Amphibians have backbones and can breathe through their skin.

-Fracking : the cracking open of underground rocks by  introducing liquid at high pressure, especially to extract natural gas. Those cracks are then held open by sand that been added to the fracking fluid.
